42% Grenache, El Camino Real Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley
33% Syrah, Sunstone Estate Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley
25% Mourvèdre, El Camino Real Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley

Spiced cranberries, raspberries and plums, violets, black pepper and wet earth are followed by subtle nuances of blackberries, mint, cloves, cedar, and toasty French oak vanillin.

The 2014 Rapsodie du Soleil is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre produced from two ultra premium vineyards, located in Santa Barbara County, including Sunstone’s 25-year old estate vineyard. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were separately sorted, lightly crushed, and de-stemmed before being pumped into an open top fermentation tank. After cold soaking, the grapes were inoculated and allowed to ferment for 12 days on the skins to extract maximum color and flavor. Following fermentation, the wines were transferred to French oak barrels, for a secondary fermentation and aging. After barrel aging for 12-months, the separate lots were blended to to taste, filtered and bottled to 450 cases 12/750mL and 120 magnums in November 2015.

Some of the best wines in the world are blends of several grape varieties. This is because winemakers have more control over the taste profile of a wine when they use wine grapes as ingredients. The practice of blending is very common even with single varietal wines. The ‘GSM’ red blend is made from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre and it’s a classic from the Côtes du Rhône region.

This medium-bodied wine is delicious now if decanted, but will gracefully mature over the next 3-5 years. Best between 2016 and 2020.
