2012 Syrah, SYV

Intoxicating aromatics of blueberry cobbler, plumb jelly, chili powder and cedar shavings dominate the subtle clove, black pepper, smoky oak and anise. GRAPES
77% 2012 Syrah, Carrari Vineyard, Los Alamos, Santa Barbara County
14% 2012 Syrah, Sunstone Estate, Santa Ynez Valley
6% 2013 Syrah (Co-fermented with 11% Viognier) Sunstone Estate, Santa Ynez Valley
3% 2013 Viognier, Verna's Vineyard, Los Alamos, Santa Barbara County

MADE
I brought my favorite right-brained approach to this Syrah, like a négociant winemaker, totally dedicated to my instincts and the art of blending. This 2012 Syrah was primarily sourced from the deeply rooted, historically significant vines at Los Alamos vineyard, planted by Joe Carrari in the 1980s. Blended with 20% Sunstone estate Syrah, a fraction of which was co-fermented with estate Viognier, the wine became something really special, especially with the 3% extra addition of the bright and fragrant 2013 Verna's Vineyard Viognier to add a dash of floral spice and finesse. The final blend was filtered and bottled to about 390 cases (12/750mL) on March 31, 2014. ~ Bion Rice, Winemaker

NOTEWORTHY
Syrah is one of the most noble grapes of the Rhône Valley, and the most widely planted Rhone variety in California. Syrah is typically made as a varietal wine in the northern Rhône, and sometimes, like this blend, the Syrah is co-fermented or blended with small amounts of Viognier. Syrah is now the most widely planted Rhône varietal in California, with over 20,000 acres rooted in 2014. If you like this wine, try Tablas Creek's Northern Rhone blends from Paso Robles.

CELLAR
With patience, our 2012 Syrah will develop some added complexity and rounded tannins with 3-5 years in bottle, under ideal cellaring conditions.

A well balanced and elegant Syrah, had me wishing I had purchased a second bottle.
