Cinnamon, clove and mint decorate a wide array of aromas, from strawberry jam and tropical fruit flowers, to dried green herbs, truffles, black currants, tea, ripe figs and black olives. Flavors of cranberries, dried cherries and toasty oak. The wine is soft, round and well balanced with nice acidity.
Picked at high levels of ripeness, the three lots were separately de-stemmed and gently crushed to small open top macro bins, where they fermented on the skins for over two weeks to best extract the intense flavors and aromas that these varietals produce. Separately aged for 22 months in a combination of 50% new and 50% neutral French oak, the lots were then blended to taste, sterile filtered and bottled to approximately 248 cases 12/750mL in July 2015.
“Today, the Super Tuscan term is accepted as meaning a red wine, often using international varietals and certainly made in a more international style. The last term can be somewhat controversial and it is used here to mean wines made with small French oak barriques, often new wood, with plenty of upfront robust fruit. At the same time, these are wines that are still Italian in their soul. They are better on the dinner table than sipping alone. They are built with a strong back bone of acidity best enjoyed with food.” Reference: Italy's Super Tuscan Wines: History & Recommendations, by Loren Sonkin.
