SENSORY
Aromas of black cherries, wild blackberries and plums give way to hints of wild sagebrush, black olives, toasty oak, All-spice and vanilla. A glossy mouthfeel is framed by fresh acidity and moderate tannins.

VINEYARDS
Sunstone’s 25-acre vineyard was planted in 1990 by the Rice Family to Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvedre and Viognier,  and is completely farmed in an organic, bio-sustainable manner. The Sunstone Merlot is grown in a gravelly-sand block on the middle terrace at the property. Soils with moderate water-holding capacity and excellent drainage produce balanced vines and a small crop of tiny berries—perfect for making the intense wines for which Sunstone is known. Valley View Vineyard is one mile from Sunstone and gently slopes South toward the Santa Ynez River, and produces what many consider Santa Barbara County's best Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah.  

CRAFTED
The Merlot, picked at 24.9° Brix, were de-stemmed and gently crushed to small open top fermenters and, after a 2-day cold-soak, spent a 12 days on skins, and was then settled in tank and transferred to barrel. The Cabernet Sauvignon was picked at 25.2° Brix, de-stemmed and gently crushed to small open top fermenters. After a 2-day cold-soak, it spent 16 days on skins, and was then settled in tank and transferred to barrel. Both lots aged for 16 months in about 25% new French oak and 75% neutral barrel. The wine was then filtered and bottled to 585 cases of 12/750mL bottles in March, 2016.

CELLAR
This medium-full bodied Merlot is delicious now, but will gracefully mature over the next 1-4 years, until around 2020.
