The Sunstone Estate Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah were all hand-picked, de-stemmed and gently crushed to small open top fermenters, cold-soaked, and fermented an average of 10-days on skins. After aging for 18-months in French oak barrels, the lots were blended, filtered and bottled to 394 cases of 12/750mL bottles and 120 magnums in July 2016.
Mason Cuvée is named after the founder’s grandson, Mason Rice. Mason helped pick the grapes and blend the wine that created this 2014 vintage, which marks our 20th anniversary since we opened the tasting room. Like Mason, this wine has powerful structure, surrounded by an attractive array of bountiful character. Although this wine risks being different with it’s broad range of complexities, it’s strong foundation will allow this wine to find balance and grace with age. This wine displays a combination of blackberry, dark plums and black cherries, layered by Earth, fresh dark coffee beans, black tea and tobacco leaves, dried Herbs du Provence, black pepper, smoked cedar, and French oak. Medium bodied, it’s framed well by a balance of fresh acidity and medium tannins.
Drink now, or cellar until 2024, when Mason graduates high school.
