The nose of the 2016 Eros Reserve exhibits a bounty of red fruit flavors, including Bing cherries and raspberries, combined with understated floral and earthy notes. A medley of boysenberry, blueberry, cherry and clove delight the palate while the muscular tannins carry through to the long, smoky finish of this medium-bodied beauty.
Some things are just better with patience and time. In that spirit, for the first time ever we made an Eros “Reserve”. Past vintages of Eros have aged in the barrel for 13-16 months, which has resulted in high quality, robust wines. However, we felt there was an opportunity to give Eros additional structure and a longer life in the bottle by extending the barrel aging period by 6 months. The result is a plush, rounded and elegant wine that has intense structure but is soft and approachable.
After de-stemming and lightly crushing to various fermentation vessels, each lot was treated differently during the fermentation process to accentuate the varietal-specific characteristics. During fermentation the lots were lightly punched down or pumped over once or twice daily to homogenize the “must” and allow for slow, gradual extraction of color and tannins from the skins and seeds. Post fermentation, each lot was gently pressed off the skins, left to settle for up to three days then put to a combination of new and neutral French and American oak barrels. At the beginning of 2017 the lots were separately racked off the lees to ensure freshness during the barrel aging process. In July 2018 the separate lots (21 total barrels) were assessed and a preliminary blend with more Cabernet Sauvignon than the 2016 Eros was hand-selected by the winemaking team. The wine was blended, filtered and bottled to 530 cases in August 2018.
This Right Bank Bordeaux-inspired blend can be paired with many grilled meats, including Grilled Pork Chops with BBQ Rub, Grilled Leg of Lamb with Garlic & Rosemary, and small game such as Grilled Rabbit in Mustard Sauce. In addition, Grilled Asparagus Pizza, Soy-Glazed Shiitake Mushroomsand Smoked Gouda are wonderful complements as well.
The 2016 Eros Reserve is drinkable now but may be enhanced by aging for up to 8-15 more years in optimal storage conditions. The additional barrel aging was specifically intended to produce a longer-lasting life inside the bottle.
