95% Cabernet Sauvignon; 5% Merlot
Aromas of fresh violets and rose petals accompany nutmeg and pine notes without overpowering the abundant ripe red fruit on the nose. On the palate, flavors of blackberry, cherry and pomegranate give way to a lush mouthfeel with well-rounded tannins as the spicy, long finish showcases black pepper, cinnamon and Allspice.
The Cabernet Sauvignon for this blend comes from the small two-acre block behind the Sunstone production facility. These 28-year old vines produce low-yielding, highly concentrated fruit that is reserved for our highest quality wines. A single new, extra-fine grain French oak barrel was purchased specifically for this wine and it was blended with 3 gallons of a high-quality estate Merlot to round out it out. The wine was filtered and bottled in August 2018, resulting in just 24 cases produced.
A high quality cut of beef with not as much fat, such as a filet mignon, would be a perfect pairing to match the Grand Reserve’s tamer tannins. Also consider a rosemary braised lamb shank, brown sugar brined pork shoulder with polenta, or a spinach and mushroom pizza.
