The wine displayes classic red and dark cherries, raspberries, cassis, wild sage, mild pepper, and some floral characteristics with well balanced toasty oak. Drinks fantastic now, but will age nicely over the next 3-5 years.
Sunstone's "Central Coast Selections" are small production lots from wine growing appellations within the Central Coast of California. This 2016 Merlot is sourced from two old vineyard sites, one in Los Alamos and the the other located 2-miles from the Sunstone Estate, in the Santa Ynez Valley. The two seperate lots of Merlot grapes were hand-picked, de-stemmed and gently crushed into stainless steel fermentation tanks. Fermentation on the skins, with multiple daily pump-overs, occured for more than a week per lot. Post fermentation, the lots were aged in 100% neutral French oak barrels for 16 months where they were monitored on a monthly basis to ensure optimal aging. The separate lots were then blended to taste, and bottled to about 520 cases in 2018.
