95% Grenache, 5% Sangiovese, Santa Ynez Valley
White pepper, strawberry and cigar ash jump out of the glass. The garnet color belies the delicacy of this Rhône grape variety. On the palate, freshness, rhubarb and strawberry notes mingle with white pepper and asian spice in this classically proportioned Grenache wine. Lingering fruit and acid on the palate beckon for another sip.
The Grenache grapes sourced for this wine came from two nearby vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley, La Presa and El Camino Real. Night picking to ensure cool fruit and ideal conditions, we took the fruit into the winery on 10/6 and 10/19 respectively. Both lots were crushed and destemmed into open top fermentors where we encouraged a cold soak for gentle extraction of grape phenolics and color. Fermentation kicked off 5 days later and the must was treated with a combination of punchdowns and pumpovers for ideal extraction. Both lots spent six months in neutral oak barrels and were blended with a small amount of Sangiovese from the nearby Terra di Paradiso vineyard to enhance ripe fruit characters.
