GRAPE BLEND & SOURCE
Sunstone Estate Vineyard
15 months in Neutral French Oak
Our first-ever Estate Mourvedre has a distinctive nose of fresh-cut violets, dried strawberries, blackberry jam, and nutmeg. The palate is complex with tart strawberry, white pepper and bittersweet baking chocolate, accompanied by black licorice and rhubarb notes and chalky tannins that lead to a pleasurable, extended finish.
The 2017 Estate Mourvedre is a first for Sunstone. Traditionally this wine has been incorporated into our Rhone-style GSM blend “Rapsodie”. But early on the winemaking team recognized the ability of this wine to shine on its own. Coming from the quarter-acre vineyard block on the property, the 1.3 tons of fruit was hand-picked in the early morning of October 13th, 2017. Upon arrival to the winery the fruit was lightly crushed and left for a three-day cold soak. After cold soak the must was inoculated and left to ferment whole cluster with twice daily punchdowns for two weeks. Upon completion of fermentation the must was lightly pressed and the wine was left for two days to settle. Post-settling the wine was barreled down to just three neutral French oak barrels and left to age for 15 months before being blended, filtered and bottled to just 69 cases in April 2019.
Mourvedre is dark and rich and can be a little meaty or gamey. So, you want to pair it with something similar. Things like braised beef short ribs, oxtail, or lamb stew. It will also be incredible with anything barbecued, like Santa Maria-style tri tip, or grilled pork loin.
The 2017 Estate Mourvedre can be enjoyed now and for up to an additional 2-5 years if stored in proper conditions.
