GRAPE BLEND & SOURCE
Sunstone Estate Vineyard
17 months in 25% New French Oak & 75% Neutral French Oak
Filled with luscious dark fruit flavor on the nose, our Estate Syrah delivers aromas of blueberry compote, ripe blackberries, and milk chocolate, with undertones of spice and black peppercorn. Subdued acidity and fine-grained tannins highlight the palate that bursts with a mélange of dark cherries, blackberry, and oregano with a touch of smokiness and dark roasted coffee.
The grapes for the 2017 Estate Syrah come from our low-lying Syrah blocks that border the Santa Ynez River. This location has proven a great growing spot for cooler-climate Syrah as it is one of the lowest elevation vineyards along the Santa Ynez Valley. The grapes were hand-harvested at night and upon delivery to the winery were de-stemmed and lightly crushed to multiple small batch fermentation vessels. After a three-day cold soak the lots were inoculated and left to ferment with twice daily punchdowns for two weeks. Post-fermentation the lots were lightly pressed and left to settle for three days before being barreled down and left to age for 17 months in 25% new French oak. In March 2019 the barrels were hand-selected, blended to tank, filtered and bottled to just 180 cases.
This medium bodied Syrah demands to be paired with roasted duck breast served in a fresh plum sauce. A delicious vegetarian option that can stand up to this wine’s tannins, bright fruit, and smoky flavors is the Veggie Goulash.
The 2017 Estate Syrah can be enjoyed now and for up to an additional 6 years if stored in proper conditions.
