GRAPE BLEND & SOURCE
74% Sangiovese, 14% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon
Sunstone Estate Vineyard and Vineyards in Los Alamos
18 months in a mixture of new and neutral French and American oak
Complex nose of raspberries, black currants, and blackberries, accented by notes of pink peppercorns, oregano and sea salt dark chocolate. Rhubarb, pomegranate, and plum flavors on the palate are met with dusty tannins and hints of dark roasted coffee, black pepper and chai black tea, giving way to mouthwatering acidity on the long finish.
The fruit for Sunstone’s 2018 “Super Tuscan” style blend comes from several vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are from the Sunstone Estate and were blended into the Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and Merlot which were grown in Los Alamos. The soil at the Los Alamos vineyard where the grapes were grown is comprised of ashy sandy loam, paragravelly ashy loam, and ashy sandy clay which adds a slight hint of mineral notes to the Sangiovese. This wine was aged in approximately 10% American Oak Barrels (to offer a balance of soft oak tannin with hints of brown sugar and vanilla caramel notes), 10% French oak barrels (to offer a rich dark chocolate essence). Our varietals were made grape to bottle and aged to their individual character and then specially selected by vineyard to do several trial blends, then the final blend, and bottled in January 2020 to 450 cases.
This Super Tuscan blend pairs perfectly with hearty meals like roasted pork, spicy sausages or grilled steak. We also love serving it alongside filling seafood dishes like meaty grilled swordfish steak or spicy cioppino. If you’re serving this Super Tuscan with appetizers, we recommend serving alongside bold aged cheddar or rich bruschetta with olive oil & rosemary!
The 2018 Soleil Rouge can be enjoyed now but will greatly benefit from being in bottle for several more years if stored in proper conditions. The optimal drinking window for this wine is 2022 to 2025.
