GRAPE BLEND & SOURCE
Vogelzang Vineyard, Happy Canyon of Santa Ynez Valley
5 months in a combination of 50% Stainless Steel & 50% Neutral French Oak
Inviting tropical and stone fruit aromas, including white peach, nectarine, ripe pineapple and mangoes, accented by limestone notes and a kiss of fresh gardenias. Lively acidity on the palate combines with baked peach and lemon before finishing with lime zest and white pepper flavors.
Grapes for the 2018 Santa Ynez Valley Viognier came from the Vogelzang Vineyard in Happy Canyon. The golden fruit was hand-harvested at night to preserve naturally-occurring acidity and to ensure a cool fermentation. Upon arrival at the winery the fruit was lightly pressed whole cluster to minimize the inclusion of harsh seed tannins and to preserve the aromatic freshness of the wine. After settling for two days the juice was racked, inoculated and fermented at a cool 55 degrees for over three weeks. Upon completion of fermentation the wine was separated to half neutral French oak barrels and half stainless steel. After five months of aging, the oak and stainless aged lots were blended to a tank, underwent cold and heat stability, and bottled to 570 cases in April 2019.
Pair this 2018 Viognier, SYV with any spicy Asian cuisine. The natural sweetness from this wine balances out the tanginess from the dish. Or, try it with grilled chicken coated in a honey bbq glaze. For a lighter style, pair with a fresh butternut squash spring salad.
The 2018 Viognier should be enjoyed now and for up to an additional 18 months. It is not a candidate for long term aging.
